At the start of 2018 the Gold Coast hosted the Commonwealth Games. With the city on stage for the whole world to see the Gold Coast City Council arranged a project called Artbox. A way to take local artists and commission them to decorate the electrical boxes that are around the city.
I was selected to submit two artworks to be judged and was later selected as the artist to transform 8 of these boxes around the city. Using a digital format to be UV laminated onto the box to help minimise the risk of graffiti.
Pacific Highway & Guineas Creek Rd Off Ramp, Currumbin Waters
Being a beachside suburb and a box that can be found when exiting the highway when heading southbound at Currumbin i wanted to show off the Gold Coast surfing culture. Using a surfboard silhouette and a mandala repeated wave pattern in the background.
Intersection of Slatyer Avenue and Racecourse Road, Bundall
This one came with the brief of being "horse racing" theme. My nickname with my friends is NAY NAY so i decided to leave my mark on the coast. Look closely
Nielsons Rd & Hickey Way, Carrara
As Carrara is located a little more inland i decided to use a native animal The Kangaroo with a native Eucalyptus leaves as the background to this electrical unit.
39 Musgrave Ave, Labrador
Using a native bird in a mandala pattern with another native flora to create a repeated pattern that is soft and eye-catching for the community and local businesses.
Corner of Connor Street and Gold Coast Highway, Burleigh Heads
This is a special artwork located in the Burleigh Heads ANZAC memorial. Using the poppy and its iconic red shade to create something that can commemorate the fallen soldiers.
Musgrave Street and Coolangatta Road, Coolangatta
Coolangatta another beachside suburb featuring World Surfing Events and beautiful marine life. Taking a Humpback Whale and using a mandala pattern to lift it off the electrical unit.
Intersection of Sickle Avenue and Marina Quays Boulevard, Hope Island
Hope Island is a prestige suburb in the northern end of the Gold Coast. With beautiful canals and waterways I wanted to feature some marine life such as the Turtle.
Intersection of Robina Parkway and Paradise Springs Avenue, Robina
Robina has quickly become a hub on the Gold Coast for Shopping, events and sport. Using a tropical Palm Tree with a sunset theme background to add a splash of colour.
A special thank you to Jazna Jenyns for capturing my artwork around the Gold Coast.
