Gloucester is a city in the west of England, near the Welsh Border. This unique little city is known for 11th-century Gloucester Cathedral, which has Romanesque and Gothic architecture, plus the tomb of King Edward II and the backdrop for some of the Harry Potter Films Nearby are the Gloucester Docks, with beautifully restored Victorian warehouses.
Cafe Rene in the city centre invited me to transform their space. This ancient bar was once a wine distillery which has now been converted to an underground bar, hosting a range of different gigs and events. We wanted create a space that suited the history, while giving the bar an cultivated feel.
Bar Manager Stephen prepped the wall with 7 coats of white paint to be able to give it a fresh base, where I delicately gridded out the wall. Using Ironlak Pump Action Paint Pens in a range of sizes to freehand the four designs to the wall. Each design was created by myself to depict the 4 playing suits, while taking in account three nautical elements.
Club- Octopus, Divers Helmet and Steering Wheel
Heart- Crab, Life Buoy, Compass
Spade- Seahorse, Anchor, Star
Diamond- Shark, Lighthouse, Waves
The walls offered a challenging canvas, as they are rounded and most of the design required me to draw upside down (hello chiropractor). Taking 7 hours to complete the detailed designs.
